If you’re one of the hardcore “sleep is for wimps” warriors – you may be in for a shock: the fewer hours of sleep you get, the less productive and useful you are.

Studies have shown that when humans are deprived of sleep – deprived meaning getting fewer than 4-5 hours per night on a consistent basis – that they build up a “sleep debt” that causes everything from cognitive malfunction to hallucinations.

Nearly all forms of life on our planet sleep. It’s a requirement that stretches back through evolution and hasn’t gone away yet. So, if you’re the type that likes to run on 4 hours a night, you might want to reconsider your schedule and set aside more time for sleeping.

It’s recommended that adults get anywhere between seven to nine hours of uninterrupted rest per night. This gives our bodies a chance to go through the various phases of REM (rapid eye movement) and NREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep in which our brain does various pieces of maintenance to our bodies. During sleep phases, the brain’s waves fluctuate in their frequency, which triggers a number of different effects such as dreaming, sleep talking and even sleep walking. Also, the body builds up stores of cortisol while you sleep, which plays a major role in your mood. Ever notice how tired people are “cranky”? Sleep resolves this!

If you work in a role that requires that you make decisions, you’re impeding your ability to make them by getting inadequate amounts of sleep. Cognitive function declines with sleep deprivation, so if you’re getting 5 hours a night consistently when your body needs 8, you’re more prone to make mistakes and to lose the edge in areas where you need your critical thinking skills.

So, what’s the moral of this story? GET SOME SLEEP! If you’re having trouble sleeping, check out a sleep aid product that contains melatonin like Sleep Once Again or 7 Hour Slumber to assist you with getting knocked out at an early hour. Start scheduling additional time in your day, every single day, to get additional sleep. Work on getting yourself up to a minimum of seven hours and once you’re there – go for eight!

Good luck!
